The department organised a workshop in association with Dalmia Cements, one of the leading cement manufacturers of the county on Monday, 21 March 2022. The program was aptly titled Practical Civil Engineering and Career Building. The main objective of the program was to give students a fresh perspective about civil engineering practice, the cement industry, and the various career opportunities for fresh engineers.
The program kicked off with a hearty welcome to the team from Dalmia cement by the head of the department, Dr. Jiji Antony.
The workshop was handled by Mr. Santhosh S Nair, AGM, Dalmia Cements. His session outlined the history of cement manufacturing, production, consumption pattern and the practical issues with regard to the use of cement in concrete. He shared his experiences - right from the start of his career, marking the absence of construction softwares like Autocad, STAAD etc., and how computers have revolutionised the civil engineering industry to what it is today, the second most employed sector after agriculture. He also pointed out how covid era had an impact on the cement manufacturing industry, which until then had seen a progressive growth of 8%, plummeted to negative growth.
The highlight of his session was the experience sharing, how he started off as a fresh engineer and progressed in his career. Attitude makes all the difference, he remarked.
Mr. Santhosh also spoke towards the end, where he touched upon the various practical problems of concrete like shrinkage cracking, spalling of concrete, delayed setting, crazing and cracking of concrete, false setting, flash setting, erosion of concrete, blistering of concrete, leaching of concrete, crack at window sill, differential settlement due to variable soil types as well as case study of positive and negative waterproofing.
He also elaborated what to look for - internships, apprentice trainings, off role openings, campus placements and higher studies.
Mr. Varun, senior executive of technical wing also engaged a brief session on the history of concrete, invention of cement in 1824 and the present manufacturing steps of cement from blasted limestone to grinding of clinker. He introduced the 26 different types of cement manufactured by Dalmia cement and 40 different tests they are subjected to.
Mr. Boby, DGM, Dalmia Cements also joined the meeting towards the end. He too shared his experience of being in the industry and motivated the students to be proud of the profession, Civil Engineering. In a kind gesture, as part of recognising talents, Dalmia recognised Ms. Divya S for her academic achievement and contribution to the departments as part of ASCE. A small gift was handed over to her by the team.
The program was jointly organised by ASCE student chapter and ACE. Ms. Divya (S8 CE) was the host. Ms. Adila Babu (S8CE), President of the Student Chapter of ASCE proposed the vote of thanks.It was a great opportunity for the students, interacting with people form Industry and gaining a fresh outlook about what to look forward to as a civil engineer.
