Study Tour to Pallivsal!

The Pallivasal Hydro Electric Project is located across Pallivasal River in Idukki district, contributing to the region's electricity generation. Pallivasal project is the first and oldest hydro electric project in the state, commissioned in 1940.

The second year BTech students of the department visited the project on 27th November 2023. This was the first study tour of the batch and the enthusiasm was very high.

The visit to the powerhouse was very informative for the students.  The visit gave them an opportunity to view the various components of the power house. The Power house is owned and operated by the Kerala State Electricity Board and has an installed Capacity of 37.5MW situated at Chithirapuram. The turbine used is the Pelton Wheel.  They were also able to see the penstocks used to supply water to the power plant. The students also visited the Mattupetty dam and studied the various parts of the dam and stepped spillway.

Apart from this, the students had fun sessions at the play area near the Mattupetty dam. The team also visited the echo point where lunch was served in the pine forests. The students also visited the spices garden where they got to see the various medicinal plants which is the basic ingredients for Ayurvedic medicines.

The return journey started after a short shopping spree for homemade chocolates and tea. A total of 74 students attended the industrial visit and was accompanied by Ms. Preethi M, Mr. Abhijith R, Mr. Sreerath S and Ms. Rinu J Achison.

The visit was very fruitful and the students and faculty had a day of fun and laughter. It was indeed a break from the regular classroom session and yet informative and enlightening.

ASCE Day Celebration - Planting Abiu sapling

This year ASCE is celebrating its 171st anniversary, a testament to the enduring legacy of the society in the realm of civil engineering. This significant event marks the commemoration of the Society's founding on November 5, 1852, when a group of twelve distinguished engineers convened at New York City's Croton Aqueduct to establish what would eventually become the prestigious American Society of Civil Engineers.

The ASCE India Section Southern Region urged everyone to plant a sapling as part of the celebration this year. Our student chapter responded by planting a "Abiu" sapling on campus. Dr Mini P R, Vice Principal, Dr. Jiji Antony, the head of the department and Mr. Jawahar Saud joined the student members in for planting the sampling on Nov 15th, 3:30PM.

The objective was to promote environmental awareness and encourage students to take an active role in preserving the environment. The sapling was planted with its survival in mind and the participants were encouraged to take care of the sapling and monitor its growth. Abiu is a tropical fruit tree originating in the Amazonian region of South America. It has a creamy and jelly-like texture and its taste is similar to the Sapodilla aka chicoo. Waiting for the saplings to bear fruits. 😀
