Get your JAB ASAP!!!

There is a "Long way to go". This was one of the headlines in an article that appeared in The Hindu today. The vaccination rates in our country is still going slow. There may be multiple reasons for that, including availability, the large population and so on.

It is absolutely evident that only Vaccines can get us out of this pandemic as demonstrated by some countries. Now that vaccination for 18-44 age group is underway, the age group which is more representative of students in our campus, it is time for everyone to get vaccinated.

Let us all keep our apprehensions aside and use the next best opportunity to get vaccinated and get rid of this pandemic as early as possible. We should also remember the fact that one will be safe only if everyone around us is also vaccinated. Let us encourage everyone around us also to get vaccinated as early as possible!!

It is more than a year we are stuck at home, everyone dearly misses the campus days. We can get back to our campus only if we stand together and get ourselves vaccinated. So, guys, get your JAB as early as Possible!!

Civil House - Session 2, Akhil Unni

The department hosted the second in the series "Civil House" on 18 June 2021, 4:00PM. The guest of honour was Mr. Akhil M Unni, graduate from the first batch of B.Tech at FISAT (2011-2015). Mr. Akhil is currently working with Hills and Fort Constructions LLC, Dubai. He beautifully narrated his life after B.Tech focussing on how he was able to start off his career as a Civil Engineer.

His talk focussed on underground structures, the work he has undertaken. The highlight of the session was the photographs of the construction sites he worked and the way he beautifully connected theory to practice. He stressed on the importance of understanding the theory behind what is practiced in the field.

He opened up for questions at the end, and was very open to the questions raised by students as well as faculty members. The questions ranged from how to apply for the job, how to search for job, the job sites that can help, what should be the focus of the fresher, opportunities for women engineers and the importance of using contacts for getting an opening. He also shared his experience working abroad, work atmosphere, the challenges he faced in his life. Thank you Akhil, we appreciate the time you had spent with us. We wish you all the very best.

Adieu ASCE Leaders - Farewell 2021

We became a part of the ASCE family in 2018. The driving force behind our entry into the ASCE family was different for each one of us. After giving about two farewell parties to our seniors, here we were, the 7 of us, attending our own farewell party, getting invited with a poster that had our own faces on it.

'Sweet and memorable ' . That's how I would describe the farewell given to us by our juniors on the 17th of May 2021. It has been an honour to be a part of the ASCE family and to be called an ASCE member and so it was a privilege to hear what our teachers and juniors had to say about us during the farewell. Though the event began quite formally with a welcome speech and felicitation, within no time it took a complete U-turn. Each of us were out there sharing our thoughts on what ASCE was to us and how much it meant to be a part of it.

Those memorable moments we had were gift wrapped to us by our juniors through a beautiful video which made us think of how lucky we were to be a part of this family. Towards the end of the event, we were out there pulling each other's legs and revealing those classroom secrets. It was a great evening filled with laughter and heart touching moments. It made us think of how lucky the seven of us were to have been part of such an amazing organisation with much more amazing people leading it.

We knew then without a doubt that ASCE FISAT was in the hands of some great people who would take it forward more.

Aavishkar 2021

Another Edition of the Virtual Expo! When the talks for organising an exhibition to showcase final year projects began 5 years ago, little did we know that we would be hosting it ‘virtually’, that too, two years in a row. Since the pandemic has confined us to our homes since 2020, Aavishkar too moved to the digital platform to rate and review projects.

The showcase provides an opportunity for final year students to demonstrate their projects and start a discourse in Civil Engineering with the added perk of the top few projects being awarded. The inauguration kicked off at 9.10am with the welcome speech by Ms Rajalakshmi, Assistant Professor. Subsequently, Ms Jiji Antony, Head of the Department, Civil Engineering inaugurated and launched the website.

The event proceeded seamlessly to conclusion by 9.40am with a vote of thanks by Mr Abin Thomas, Assistant Professor, FISAT. This ’virtual’ edition featured Practitioner Advisor to ASCE Student Chapter FISA -Mr Johncy K Sam, ASCE-Southern Region President Mr Narasimha Chary Poluju and Dean: Academics,FISAT Dr. Mini P R.

The event received positive responses and was excellently coordinated by student volunteers. The https://sites.google.com/fisat.ac.in/aavishkar21 hosts an array of projects from various streams of Civil Engineering and will be an amazing learning experience for those who wish to explore this science. I, for one, thoroughly appreciated the showcase and what it had to offer. The rating was fun too. Hope you too have an experience as enjoyable as I had. Do leave your reviews and comments! Looking forward to the next edition of Aavishkar, with sincerest hopes that it will be in person, in our ever beloved venue-’Auditorium’ with the pandemic a distant memory.

#ThrowbackFISAT 2014-2018 batch

It was yet another moment of joy and happiness as the students of 2014-2018 batch came together to take a trip down memory lane. The department organised the first batch wise alumni meet #ThrowbackFISAT of the year on 13 June 2021, Sunday.

The initial plan was to start the program at 7:30PM and then close in an hour or so. But, when the the event started, it exceeded the expectations of every one. With nearly everyone from the batch joining, the meeting became a big fun place to share sweet memories the students had during their studies here.

Though there was a formal welcome by group advisor of the batch, Ms. Preethi followed by felicitation by the HoD, Dr. Jiji Antony, the meeting turned into a very enjoyable one with students sharing the stories of mischiefs, hostel and campus memories, tours, class and started pulling each others legs.

The event was hosted by the student team of ASCE student chapter, Gokul, Catherine, Swetha and a couple of others. The students and teachers shared nostalgic moments of those times. The highlight was a collage video with fond memories prepared by the junior students.

It would have been more fun if the event was hosted on campus, but, may be the participation was high since it was online. It was almost 9:30PM when the group reluctantly said good bye and closed the session. Thanks to Ms. Gayathri, "alumni turned faculty" for organising the event.

CIVIL HOUSE - Connect, Chat, Inspire

The Department kick started a new series of sessions to the connect the students pursuing their graduate course with the alumni. The first in the session was handled by Mr. Ashish Johnson (2017 B.Tech graduate) who is currently working as Project Supervisor at Concretec New Zealand Ltd.

He started off by encouraging his juniors to give more attention to what they are learning now as it will benefit them when they go on site. He also shared his experience while deciding to move abroad to pursue his higher studies and the hurdles he faced in the process. He ensured the students that ample opportunities are available for Civil Engineering graduates in the industry.

He also shared pictures of projects undertaken by him and the company he represents now. Asish patiently clarified the doubts raised by students and teachers during the session.

The session started with a welcome address by Dr. Jiji Antony, Head of Department and concluded around 6:00 PM with a vote of thanks by Navya K, S4 CE. The session saw an attendance of 120 participants.

It was a pleasure see Ashish after a long time and to know the heights that he has achieved. Congrats and all good wishes to him.

Engineers & Environment - Ms. Ananthitha

The NSS Unit of FISAT collaborated with the Department for conducting a webinar on "Engineers and the Environment " on the occasion of Work Environment Day (5 June 2021). The speaker was Ms. Ananthitha A, who served the department almost seven years back. She is presently the General Manager for Ultra Tech Environmental Consultancy, Thane. It was a very happy moment for the department to have Ananthita back in campus (online ๐Ÿ˜) speaking to the students. Ms. Ananthitha is really passionate about the environment and this was really evident in her interaction with the students. Her speech was loaded with examples, all which we come across in day to day life. The way she connected engineering examples to sustainability and environment was really awesome. The program was inaugurated by Dr. C Sheela, Vice Principal.
