Waterproofing & Insulation and job opportunities: Invited Talk

The department organised a technical talk in collaboration with SIWIN, a company specialising in waterproofing services, consultation and training on 28th September 2022. The session was hosted in the seminar hall.

Mr. M S Sudish, Director of the Institute was the speaker of the day. Mr. M S Sudish is a Civil Engineer by profession and has rich experience in the field of waterproofing. During the one and a half hour session, Mr. Sudhish gave the students an overview of water proofing sector in India and shared his experiences. He stressed on the importance of up-skilling and the future opportunities in the field of waterproofing services in India and abroad. He was accompanied by Ms. Bijimol Prajul, Human Capital Management and Mr. Tollson, Senior Associate at SIWIN.

The talk was well received by the students and helped them gain perspective on the wide number of opportunities for Civil Engineers.

Visit to HE-MAN Steel Fabrication Unit

Classroom learning should always be supplemented with practical knowledge - this is proven beyond doubt in Engineering, especially for subjects like Design of Structures. The third semester M.Tech Structural Engineering and Construction Management students from our campus made an Industrial Visit to He-man Steel Fabrication Unit at Mookkannoor on 28 Sep 2022. He-Man is well know for their robotic parking system, they have patented the technology and is one of largest steel fabrication units in the state. They undertake very large projects including Robotic parking systems, Prefabricated steel structures, Industrial Buildings, Steel Brides and so on. This visit was arranged as part of the course Design of Advanced Steel Structures, an elective offered in the third semester. The course is very practical oriented and involves design of gantry girders, industrial buildings, cold formed structures, towers, masts, brides etc.

The visit provided the students with a great opportunity to get a real feel for steel fabrication and the various aspects of prefabrication using steel. It was indeed an enriching experience for the 23 students from this batch. They interacted with Mr. K T Jose, the MD of the firm who himself took the students for a tour of the facility. The facility is housed in a 35m high heavy industrial building with multiple gantries and fabrication facility. The students got to experience the gantry cranes, girders, heavy hydraulic press, robotic welding and cutting systems, drilling and milling machines. The automation that He-Man is able to implement in their facility is quite appreciable not common in our region. This makes their facility more efficient. Mr. Jose also spared some time to share his experience of starting up this unit and how challenging it was for scaling to this level. He encouraged the students to take up challenges as engineers and cultivate a daring spirit.

Civil House

Civil House is back. On 16th Sep, Adarsh Manoj and Eldhose Roy 2016-2020 batch visited the campus to interact with the students. Both of them are in Germany and interaction was about how to plan, prepare, apply and get into Germany for Masters and Job. It was a great opportunity for civil engineering students to interact and learn from their graduated seniors.

The event, which took place at the Department Seminar Hall, was organised by our department's association, ACE. The one and a half hour session was packed with information, both Adarsh and Eldhose sharing their experience of applying and getting into the university.

Eldhose Roy took his masters in fluid mechanics and hydraulic engine and he is migrating to Germany in the near future. He explained well about how he applied to German university "without the help of others" and what are the criteria that one should meet to apply to the university.

Adarsh Manoj reflected on his time spent living in Germany and the difficulties he encountered when applying. He described how he dealt with every challenge he faced at that time.

It was indeed a very helpful session for the students who are planning to go abroad for higher  studies.
