The department organised a workshop in association with Dalmia Cements, one of the leading cement manufacturers of the county on Monday, 21 March 2022. The program was aptly titled Practical Civil Engineering and Career Building. The main objective of the program was to give students a fresh perspective about civil engineering practice, the cement industry, and the various career opportunities for fresh engineers.

The program kicked off with a hearty welcome to the team from Dalmia cement by the head of the department, Dr. Jiji Antony.

The workshop was handled by Mr. Santhosh S Nair, AGM, Dalmia Cements. His session outlined the history of cement manufacturing, production, consumption pattern and the practical issues with regard to the use of cement in concrete. He shared his experiences - right from the start of his career, marking the absence of construction softwares like Autocad, STAAD etc., and how computers have revolutionised the civil engineering industry to what it is today, the second most employed sector after agriculture. He also pointed out how covid era had an impact on the cement manufacturing industry, which until then had seen a progressive growth of 8%, plummeted to negative growth.

The highlight of his session was the experience sharing, how he started off as a fresh engineer and progressed in his career. Attitude makes all the difference, he remarked.

Mr. Santhosh also spoke towards the end, where he touched upon the various practical problems of concrete like shrinkage cracking, spalling of concrete, delayed setting, crazing and cracking of concrete, false setting, flash setting, erosion of concrete, blistering of concrete, leaching of concrete, crack at window sill, differential settlement due to variable soil types as well as case study of positive and negative waterproofing.

He also elaborated what to look for - internships, apprentice trainings, off role openings, campus placements and higher studies.

Mr. Varun, senior executive of technical wing also engaged a brief session on the history of concrete, invention of cement in 1824 and the present manufacturing steps of cement from blasted limestone to grinding of clinker. He introduced the 26 different types of cement manufactured by Dalmia cement and 40 different tests they are subjected to.

Mr. Boby, DGM, Dalmia Cements also joined the meeting towards the end. He too shared his experience of being in the industry and motivated the students to be proud of the profession, Civil Engineering. In a kind gesture, as part of recognising talents, Dalmia recognised Ms. Divya S for her academic achievement and contribution to the departments as part of ASCE. A small gift was handed over to her by the team.

The program was jointly organised by ASCE student chapter and ACE. Ms. Divya (S8 CE) was the host. Ms. Adila Babu (S8CE), President of the Student Chapter of ASCE proposed the vote of thanks.
It was a great opportunity for the students, interacting with people form Industry and gaining a fresh outlook about what to look forward to as a civil engineer.

The Internship cell of the Department of Civil Engineering in association with CILL Associates organised a survey camp for the eighth semester B.Tech Civil Engineering students from  15 to 18 March 2022. The objective of the survey camp was to equip the students with practical knowledge and enable them to take up a real survey using total station. The theoretical knowledge they had acquired through classrooms was put to practice by making them use the instruments and various surveying techniques used in the industry.

The 4 days survey camp focused on various works, from the basics to contouring and the generation of topographical map of FISAT campus. The survey camp met its objectives, enhanced their practical knowledge, encouraged the students to build leadership and teamwork. HOLI 2022

HOLI, the festival of colours, yet another occasion for celebrations at FISAT. Keeping apart the tight academic schedules, all the students spent that an hour dancing to the beats of Nasik Dol and showering the colours of unity, joy and friendship to each other.

It was 4.00 pm in the evening on Friday the 18th. The excitement of celebrating Holi was at its peak. Every one of us were waiting outside the gates of the campus for the colour game to begin. Nearly by 4.10 pm, the music began and colours were thrown on us from no where. The packets of colours, water guns and water balloons added more fun to the celebration. Happy faces were dancing in colours all around.

It is said that Holi is based on the cycles of the moon and it celebrates the strength of goodness and love. Families bond, friends forgive each other and unite to enjoy the celebration of colours . And we the FISAT family, was much honoured to have this quality time to bond with colours, and we added yet another milestone of a happy celebration to our college life.
