Sports!

It has been several years since our campus last celebrated the Annual Sports Day. To the best of our memory, the previous full-scale Sports Day was conducted in 2019. After that, the COVID-19 pandemic and other constraints made it difficult to organise the event on a large scale. However, selection trials and small sports meets were conducted every year.

The Annual Sports Day was finally celebrated on 27 January 2026. The meet was named Astra 2026. The event began with a grand opening ceremony that included a march past by all the four houses - Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, and Topaz. The inauguration also featured the Olympic torch relay.

Competitions were conducted in a wide range of events, including 100 m (men and women), relays (men and women), long jump, 1500 m, 5000 m, shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw. The events witnessed good participation from students.

The campus has also made significant investments in sports infrastructure, including a new cricket ground, two football grounds, and other supporting facilities. Regular coaching camps are conducted for football, volleyball, cricket, and basketball, which have helped our students win several prizes at the university level. Many of our students also represent the university teams.

On the day of the Sports Meet, the grounds truly came alive!

MoU for Add-on Course

Our Department has taken yet another meaningful step towards strengthening industry-oriented learning by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Karthas Academy and Kochuthommen Associates on 21st January 2026  for offering Add-on Course on  "Diploma in Interior Design" to our students.

This collaboration reflects the continuous efforts of the Department to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world professional requirements. The MoU aims to provide students with opportunities to gain practical exposure, skill-based training, and certification support in emerging and in-demand areas of Civil Engineering.

Through this partnership, students will be able to access structured training modules, expert mentoring, and hands-on learning sessions designed to enhance their technical competencies and employability. This is the second edition of the course being conducted in the Department. In its first edition, 30 students were successfully placed in leading construction and interior design firms such as Asset homes, Trine holdings, D life etc.

Faculty Development Program on Disaster-Resilient Construction Techniques and Sustainable Practices

Our department  organised a Six-Day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) titled “Disaster Resilient Construction Techniques and Sustainable Practices” from 14th to 21st January 2026. The programme was organized in a hybrid mode.

The FDP was formally inaugurated on 14th January 2026 at the Main Seminar Hall, by Dr. E. S. M. Suresh, Professor and Head, NITTTR, Kalamassery.

The FDP was designed to enhance the technical competence of faculty members and postgraduate students in the domains of disaster risk reduction, resilient infrastructure, and sustainable development, with special emphasis on Kerala’s disaster-prone context. The FDP  addressed both theoretical frameworks and practical applications, aligned with current Indian Standards and global sustainability goals.

The FDP featured eminent academicians, researchers, and industry experts from premier institutions and reputed organizations such as IIT, NIT, CUSAT, KILA, KSDMA, KERI, and GCC Abu Dhabi to address the major themes of the FDP. Various sessions of the FDP were :

  1. Prof. E. S. M. Suresh, Professor & Head, NITTTR, Kalamassery, Topic: GIS Applications in Disaster Management and Vulnerability Assessment
  2. Dr. S. Sreekumar, Disaster Management Expert, KILA, Topic: Landslide Risk Reduction and Resilience Strategies – Kerala Perspective
  3. Dr. Deepa G. Nair, Professor, School of Engineering, CUSAT, Topic: Sustainable Development Goals and Housing
  4. Shri. G. Sankar, Advisor, KSDMA, Former Scientist ‘G’ (Retd.), NCESS, Topic: Land Subsidence in Kerala due to Soil Piping

Remembering Panicker Sir

FISAT will never forget Dr. K. S. M. Panicker. He was the one person who walked alongside P. V. Mathew when the Federal Bank Officers Association aspired to start an engineering college. Panicker Sir was the Principal of Model Engineering College when Mathew Sir approached him for consultation on establishing an engineering institution. That relationship played a crucial role in shaping FISAT into what it is today. Panicker Sir was instrumental in the academic and institutional development of FISAT during its formative years. He helped in selecting the courses, planning the requirements, recruiting people, and developing the institution.

FISAT held a special place in Panicker Sir’s heart, we believe. He had a very clear vision while setting the goals for FISAT in its initial days. He was a mentor to many young faculty members on campus at that time. Personally, for me, he was someone we always looked up to, the vision and foresight he possessed cannot be explained in words.

I still remember the day he called me to his chamber and asked me to prepare the detailed project report for starting the B.Tech programme in Civil Engineering at our campus. He mentored and guided me at every step in building the department. He stood with us always, encouraging us in everything we did.

It was his vision that also helped us start the M.Tech programme. One of the strongest reflections of his trust, even today, was the opportunity he extended to me to be a placement officer when I had zero experience. When I look back, it was a great honour for me to work with him at FISAT. There are a million more things I can recall, but...  I am sure there are many, many hearts he touched during his academic career.

When the news of his passing reached us late last night, we were all saddened beyond words. Twenty-two years flashed by, the time we spent with him on campus, during working hours and beyond.

This photograph will remain in my mind forever, I took it the day we walked to the top floor of FISAT on a fine evening, we could see the master planner looking at a creation that he was a part of.
