BRIDGE-A-THON by ISTE

The Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) FISAT chapter on our campus has gained new momentum after winning the Best Faculty Chapter Award for the year 2023. The student chapter of ISTE organised  a technical festival
ARCANE 1.0 on 31 August 2024 at our campus.

As part of ARCANE 1.0, the department organised a bridge making competition using ice-cream sticks, Bridge-A-Thon. The task for the teams was to make a bridge that is aesthetically pleasing and can withstand maximum load!

In this 2.5 hr competition, 10 teams participated, and was held in the material testing lab of our department. Each team had 4 members. It was fascinating to see students using their skills and ideas to come out with different designs.

After the final testing, the team consisting of Ali Arzlan (S5CEA), Cyril Pius (S5CSA), Dinil (S5CSA) and Abin S(S5CSA) was judged as the winners.  The runner up team was Gayathri P (S5CEA), Anmariya Babu (S5CEA), Aleena Mariya Jojo (S5CEA) and Ann Tressa Joseph (S5CEA).

The winners were awarded with a cash prize by faculty advisor of ISTE student chapter Ms, Soumay S Raj during the prize distribution ceremony held at Civil seminar hall on 4th September 2024. Dr. Jacob Thomas V, Principal, Dr. Mini P R, Vice Principal also attended the event.

The faculty event coordinator was Dr. Asha Joseph (Associate Prof.) and student coordinators were Sona M S (S7 CEA), Amala Poly (S5 CEA), Amna Farhath (S3 CEA) and Diya Rose Peter (S3 CEA).  The judging panel was Dr.Jiji Antony (Professor & HoD), Dr. Asha Joseph (Associate Prof), and Ms. Neeraja Nair (Assistant Professor).

Industrial Visit - Prime Group Prefabricated Steel Structure Manufacturing Unit, Kanjikode

The Department arranged an Industrial visit for selected students to Prefabricated Steel Structure Manufacturing Unit of the Prime Group located at KINFRA Integrated Industrial & Textile Park located at Kanjikode, Palakkad on 27 August 2024. Thirty six students from all semesters accompanied by two faculty members, Dr. Asha Joseph and Mr. Sreerath, joined the visit. The team started around 8:00AM in the morning from campus and after a brief tea break in between, reached the facility by 11:30AM.

The visiting group was welcomed and subsequently divided into two batches. This batching was to ensure a comprehensive learning experience for the students and to ensure the safety of the students, as the manufacturing unit operates within a potentially hazardous environment.

The first batch participated in a theoretical session where they were introduced to the core
concepts and methodologies behind pre engineered steel structure manufacturing. Meanwhile, the second batch was escorted through the manufacturing unit to observe the production processes firsthand. Each session lasted around 1 hour and 30 minutes, during which they were provided with detailed explanations and demonstrations.

The students were able to see the different  stages of the manufacturing process, including the cutting of steel plates using CNC automatic multi-head cutting machines, hole punching with advanced laminating machines, and the subsequent assembly of steel components into desired sections. The students also had the opportunity to witness the specialised machinery used in these processes, gaining valuable insights into the operational aspects of the facility.

After the sessions and a lunch in between, the students and faculty members reached back the campus at 5:30 PM.

Throughout the visit, the students were collectively active and engaged, demonstrating a strong interest in the various aspects of the manufacturing processes. They thoroughly enjoyed the trip, which provided them with invaluable insights into the production of prefabricated steel structures, enhancing their understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical applications.
