Farewell to Principal

Dr. Geroge Issac, our current Principal is bidding farewell to FISAT. After his tenure of 6 years, he is retiring on 31 May 2021. He joined FISAT back in 2015. Dr. George Issac has made significant contributions to the Institution over these years. He headed FISAT for the two major accreditation processes, NAAC and NBA. Needless to say, FISAT came out very successful in both these accreditations. He was instrumental in bringing out many changes in the institution, mainly in the office, streamlining its functions, digitising payments and so on. He would listen, and help arrive at decisions giving every consideration to the matter presented.

Dr. George Issac has been a well wisher for the Department of Civil Engineering. He had shown great interest in all the activities of the department, encouraged and supported us in all the curricular and co-curricular activities. His support for conducting NIRMAN, SECON will be remembered.

A farewell meeting was arranged on behalf of the staff members on Saturday, 29 May 2021. Only a handful could attend the event in person. The program was streamed online - the new normal. Members of FISAT family shared their respect and appreciation for all his contributions to the Institution. A great human being who respects the views of others, even if it is critical.

The department wishes the very best for a healthy and peaceful retired life to our beloved Principal.

SECON'21 - yet another success story

SECON is the annual conference on Structural Engineering and Construction Management organised by  the Department, since 2017. The fifth edition was held from 12-15 May 2021. As the the curtains fell today, there was a sense of achievement. The keynote speakers, chairs, co-chairs, authors, participants, each and everyone who associated with the conference expressed their appreciation for the maintaining the quality and executing it in the best possible way. The team was so exited when the feedback poured in during the valedictory function today.

The highlight of this years conference was the presence of 6 international speakers. (https://secon21.fisat.ac.in) The subject varied from trenches technologies, to machine learning to structural health monitoring and earthquake risk assessment.  This year also springer is associating with SECON for publications. There was an overwhelming response to the call for paper. With nearly 400+ submissions, it was a herculean task for the committee to review and finally accept 100 papers for presentation and publication. There were 100+ reviewers, both from academia and industry. The papers were presented in 27 sessions during the four days of the conference. It was not an easy fete, the entire team of faculty members, student volunteers worked tirelessly for months to execute it. The hurdles posed by the pandemic and unfavourable weather conditions were managed by the team in a perfect manner. The association with professional bodies like ASCE, ISTE, ICI, IE and Paradigm made the conference  special.

Stay home, Stay safe

It's lockdown again, no academic activities. Covid is back with a vengeance, it has touched all of us one way or other. There are so many lost lives, the country is under siege. Back in January, when things were getting better, we hoped that everything will get better and we will be able to start contact classes, meet each other. No, it didn't happen, instead, things got worse.

The story is different during this second wave. Many faculty members as well as students are now directly affected. Every day, there is a bad news waiting for you. This is a real concern. Our state is managing somehow without a big crisis. But, it doesn't mean that things are fine. It can go wrong any time. The best way to protect ourselves is to stay at home and get vaccinated when our turn comes. Each one of us must play our part, not to spread the virus. Let us all do our bit and ensure that we can break the chain.

Most importantly, keep yourself healthy, both physically and mentally. Engage in meaningful activities, exercise at home, speak to friends often, share quality time with your family. Avoid travel, visits to friends, malls, avoid team sports. You can try reading, learn or try something new, keep yourself engaged. Follow the instructions given by the government. Call your teachers when you feel so, share your thoughts, concerns if any - they will also be happy to speak to you too. Do not hesitate to pick the phone and call. Above all, keep yourself Happy!!

As the wise say, this shall also pass. Stay Home, Stay Safe.
