Geomatic Dimensions in Civil Engineering

A webinar on Geomatic Dimensions in Civil Engineering was hosted by the ASCE student chapter on 2 July 2021. The resource person was Dr. Suresh Francis, Scientist, Kerala State Remote Sensing and Environment Centre (KSREC), Thiruvananthapuram. 

This webinar was conducted as part of the MOU between the department of Civil Engineering and KSREC. During the session, Dr. Suresh Francis discussed the very basic concepts of Remote Sensing and GIS and the technology used to capture and interpret the data. He stressed on the fact that the future is GIS and its applications in Civil engineering are immense.  The session saw more than 100 participants from the different batches of the department. The program was coordinated by Ms. Abhiya Abbas Mundol, Assistant Professor.

Dr. Suresh also discussed in the detail, the implications of Geospatial technologies in day to life, and how it can impact the life of everyone in the near future. The talk also shed light into real time data analytics and how it is being utilised in various technologies around us. The various possibilities of Big Data, AI, IOT, Cloud, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Edge Computing etc in Civil Engineering were explained in detail. Dr. Suresh also shared information pertaining to some of the projects undertaken by KSREC for various departments of the Government of Kerala and how geospatial technology is used for decision making at Government level. The session was packed with information and touched upon almost every aspect of the application of Geospatial Technologies.
