Site Vists by M.Tech Students
Jointly organised by the Department of Civil Engineering at FISAT and the Builders Association of India (BAI), Angamaly Centre, our group of 11 students set out to explore real-world construction marvels. Accompanied by our faculty members Dr. Jiji Antony and Dr. Unnikrishnan S., and backed by the support of Mr. K.P. Vinod (Chairman, BAI Angamaly Centre) and Mr. K.A. Johnson (Past State Chairman, BAI), the day was designed to give us practical exposure to structural systems, construction practices, load-transfer mechanisms, and the real-world application of engineering principles.
The first site was an convention centre building near St. Jude’s Shrine, Yoodhapuram, Kidangoor. Executed by HYARCH PROJECTS LLP under the ownership of Mr. K.P. Paul, this large project boasts an approximate built-up area of 60,000 sq. ft. Here, Dr. Dileep, the project's structural engineer, walked students through the technical depths of its structural design and execution. He thoroughly explained the load-transfer mechanisms, structural planning, modern construction methods, and the strict testing protocols carried out during construction.
Walking through the site gave students invaluable insights into how large-scale buildings are planned, how loads seamlessly navigate through different structural elements, and the crucial role structural engineers play in ensuring ultimate safety, stability, and performance. Dr. Dileep also highlighted the practical challenges encountered on-site and the innovative engineering measures adopted to resolve them. A guided tour followed by an engaging question-and-answer session allowed us to directly bridge our theoretical foundations with physical structural components and site practices.
The next site was near M.C. Road, close to Moolans Supermarket, where students explored a fascinating B+G+2 (Basement + Ground Floor + Two Upper Floors) pre-engineered building. Dr. Jebin Jacob, Structural Engineer, introduced us to the modern principles of semi-composite construction and the efficiency of prefabricated components. During this session, we dove deep into core structural concepts like load distribution, secondary framing systems, and the function of shear studs. Particular emphasis was placed on the synergy between steel and concrete in composite construction, teaching us how smart structural arrangements and secondary framing can minimise the need for heavy bracing, thereby driving construction efficiency and delivering meaningful cost savings. Another vibrant Q&A session here helped students grasp how engineering teams select and tailor structural systems based on unique project constraints and practical field realities.
Finally, this first site visit of our batch offered a very good complementary learning experience, showcasing both conventional and pre-engineered structural systems side by side. It demonstrated how practicing structural engineers successfully balance safety, functionality, constructability, and economy when tackling complex engineering challenges.
Being able to observe these systems up close, interact directly with seasoned structural engineers, and analyze construction techniques firsthand allowed students to build a connection between classroom theory and field practice.

Paper Bridge Competition
On 2nd September 2026, a simple challenge involving newspapers and tapes turned into a wonderful memory for all of us. Today, our department organized a “Paper Bridge Competition” for us, the first-year students.
The event kicked off at 2:20 p.m. in the Civil Seminar Hall. Students from both divisions gathered together eagerly. As Ms Rinu J Achison, Assistant Professor, CE wrapped up her briefing regarding the rules, nervousness was etched onto the faces of the students, with each of us wondering what the next few minutes would bring.
Since we hadn’t quite gotten to know each other yet, we were all concerned about the spirit of teamwork, especially considering the fact that we had been told that each group would consist of 10 people. However, as the competition began, all the initial worries seemed to fade away. A sudden sense of team spirit took over as everyone focused on completing the task. Ideas were exchanged, roles were taken up, and students who had barely known each other began working together with surprising ease.
The room soon filled with laughter and enthusiastic participation as we worked towards building our bridge. This was more than just a project for us. Through this activity, we were able to understand a few basic concepts of Civil Engineering. We also learned how factors such as stability and strength can matter greatly when building a structure.
When it was finally time to announce the winners, everyone gathered around eager to know the results. The third prize was awarded to both Group 3 and Group 12, followed by the second prize, which was bagged by Group 1. Finally, joyous chaos erupted as the first-place winner was announced. Group 11 emerged as the overall champions. Hearty congratulations to all the winners and participants!
Today was also the day we truly did something special together. We stepped out of our comfort zones, worked together as a team, and gained a small yet meaningful glimpse into the world of Civil Engineering.
