There is a tendency among civil engineers to keep away from programming and similar computational tools. It is largely due to the common perception that civil engineers are not meant to write programs or engage deeply with coding. This is far from reality. With the rapid advancement of technology, especially in this age of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, civil engineers are increasingly exposed to such interdisciplinary domains, where programming, data analysis, and simulation play a crucial role in solving complex engineering problems.
All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has come up with initiatives to equip teachers from non-computer science backgrounds with advanced PG certificate programs in emerging areas. These programs are fully sponsored by AICTE. The duration of the program is six months, involving both in-person and online sessions. The programs are conducted by premier institutions such as Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institutes of Technology, and selected National Institutes of Technology.
The department is proud that four of our faculty members, including the Head of the Department, successfully completed these certifications this year. Dr. Kavitha, our HoD, got certified from Indian Institute of Science in Machine Learning. Ms. Neeraja Nair, Ms. Rajalakshmi T R, and Ms. Reshma Prasad got certified from National Institute of Technology Karnataka in Deep Learning.
These proactive steps taken by the faculty have significantly strengthened the department and will go a long way in imparting advanced training to students in such technologies, ultimately changing the perception that civil engineers are limited to traditional practices and are not suited for programming or data-driven approaches.
