The department of Civil Engineering organised a technical talk on “Vastu - Sastra Vs Engineering“ on 18th October 2022. The program was organised in association with ISTE FISAT chapter and the session was hosted in the department seminar hall. Dr C V Lal, Retd. Professor, Government Engineering College, Thrissur was the speaker of the day. Dr Lal has research interest in the study of building materials according to Vasusatra and is a well known speaker in the field.
During the two hour session, Dr Lal gave the students an overview of how Ayurveda and Panchabhoota are related to Vastusastra. He has clearly described why we consider ‘Man as Vastu’. The 4 major considerations in vastu - Dimension, Proportion, Orientation and relative position, were well explained. The factors to be considered for the selection of plot, orientation of rooms for various purposes, relative dimensions of rooms were explained based on both scientific and engineering basis. Several superstitions related to Vastu and probable reasons behind them were also mentioned.
The talk concluded with the remarks that if the vastusatra principles are adapted in construction, very comfortable living condition can be ensured in hot and humid climate of Kerala with maximum utilisation of prevailing direction of wind and sun rays thus leading to sustainable engineering construction
The talk was well received by the students and staff. They enthusiastically participated in the interactive session at the end of the talk.
