On 2nd September 2026, a simple challenge involving newspapers and tapes turned into a wonderful memory for all of us. Today, our department organized a “Paper Bridge Competition” for us, the first-year students.
The event kicked off at 2:20 p.m. in the Civil Seminar Hall. Students from both divisions gathered together eagerly. As Ms Rinu J Achison, Assistant Professor, CE wrapped up her briefing regarding the rules, nervousness was etched onto the faces of the students, with each of us wondering what the next few minutes would bring.
Since we hadn’t quite gotten to know each other yet, we were all concerned about the spirit of teamwork, especially considering the fact that we had been told that each group would consist of 10 people. However, as the competition began, all the initial worries seemed to fade away. A sudden sense of team spirit took over as everyone focused on completing the task. Ideas were exchanged, roles were taken up, and students who had barely known each other began working together with surprising ease.
The room soon filled with laughter and enthusiastic participation as we worked towards building our bridge. This was more than just a project for us. Through this activity, we were able to understand a few basic concepts of Civil Engineering. We also learned how factors such as stability and strength can matter greatly when building a structure.
When it was finally time to announce the winners, everyone gathered around eager to know the results. The third prize was awarded to both Group 3 and Group 12, followed by the second prize, which was bagged by Group 1. Finally, joyous chaos erupted as the first-place winner was announced. Group 11 emerged as the overall champions. Hearty congratulations to all the winners and participants!
Today was also the day we truly did something special together. We stepped out of our comfort zones, worked together as a team, and gained a small yet meaningful glimpse into the world of Civil Engineering.
