18th August 2026 marked an important one for all of us first-year Civil Engineering students. Our Department had far in advance understood the importance of introducing the students to a broader role of Civil Engineering in Society. With this vision, the department organized a seminar titled “Civil Engineering And Society” in association with Builders Association Of India, Angamaly Centre where we had the privilege of listening to Er. Paul K Babu ,The managing partner of Geomatrix Projects Angamaly.
The session was held in the civil seminar hall and I was given an opportunity to briefly address the gathering about Er. Paul K Babu, his professional background and the purpose of his presence at the seminar.
Er. Paul K Babu took over the dais and spoke about the significance of understanding the importance of Civil Engineering in improving society and that each one of us is called upon to create a sustainable infrastructure for a better and greater tomorrow. He reminded us that we all hold a great responsibility towards society. He further discussed the importance of a sustainable environment highlighting it as a sacred part of the job. The session touched upon the ethics and social impact of civil engineers alongside innovation and technology in addressing the changing society.
His words enlightened us and made us realize the beauty yet the great responsibility of Civil Engineering. His experience helped us gain an additional perspective. As the event reached its final moments, Dr. Jiji Antony, Professor, thanked him for his words and expressed her appreciation for his valuable insights following which a memento was presented to him as a token of appreciation and gratitude.
The session concluded on a valuable note leaving us students to ponder about the wonders of our chosen profession and encouraged us to see beyond the classroom and understand the greater purpose of Civil Engineering.
